About This Simulator

This simulator models the fundamental chemistry of Earth's troposphere, focusing on the oxidation chain: CH₄ → CO → CO₂. It includes key reactions involving OH radicals, ozone photochemistry, and NOₓ cycling.

The model uses a simplified chemical mechanism with ~15 reactions and ~10 key species, solved using the Runge-Kutta 4th order method.

Key Concepts

  • OH Radical: The "detergent" of the atmosphere, controlling the lifetime of most trace gases
  • Photolysis: Light-driven reactions (J-values) that vary with solar zenith angle
  • NOₓ Cycling: NO ↔ NO₂ interconversion controls O₃ production
  • CH₄ Oxidation: Multi-step process converting methane to CO₂
